The system is not that good but I prefer to spend my time working on IpBike than trying to set up an alternative. It is at least good at keeping the spam away.

It is advisable to 'copy' before you try and post as the captcha stuff is a bit to agresive and the back buttone is not working for everyone.  You can at least then paste and have another go.

Great app, good solid professional execution, what more can I say.

The first thread was getting annoyingly long, this is a continuation for readability.

Could you use GPS based temperature and humidity? I have an app called "GPStherm" which does this. I have my phone is a weatherproof bag so the battery temperature is all over the place (up to 125F). I have solved the barometer issue by keeping the bottom zipper slightly open (with the charger port open, a Samsung Galaxy S5 Active issue) but a sealed bag makes using the battery temp impossible.

How about a sneak peak at the new UI, I am curious where you are going with the interface. Even a pointer to some other "in the style of" apps would be appreciated.

Most likely you are already aware of this, but just in case. The hardware "Menu" button is going away, it is now expected to be an "icon button". My phone still allows me access by long pressing the applications button, but as I understand it this will disappear from newer Android phones.

"I wish for" a change direction indicator for Settings such as Average speed. My old bike computer had an indicator arrow for when the average was changing. Up for increase, Down for decrease. Another possible indicator would be the color of the displayed value, perhaps green for increase, yellow for decrease.

"I wish for" a "wind" drop down box in the ride history to go along with the "Effort" and "Quality", etc.. This would be for perception of wind, not a real value. Default selections could be; None, Light, Medium, Heavy and Gusts.

"I wish for" (in the new UI) the "Workout" and "Log" functions to be completely hidden by a checkbox setting. These functions are not needed when you are just doing a casual ride or just recording a trip. I have more than once pressed the Lap button by accident, not a big deal but it would be nice.

You need to give me some links for GPStherm as my Google search found nothing of interest. Gps has no temperature or humidity data. The only thing I can think your app is doing is look up the data from some online weather source but I would not look to do this as I try and avoid online stuff while riding as it gets through the battery quickly.

New UI is basically just modernising so going to an Action bar and Sliding drawer for switching between the main screens. Some of the major start stop type buttons will remain and initially the main while riding screen want change much but the lesser buttons will move to actions on the action bar.

I plan on reworking the ride summary from scratch to make it more table driven but more user customisable. So as I add display items in the future they will get into the summary automatically without my having to do special coding like at the moment.

Unfortunately my progress on the new UI is very slow. It's taken me a long time just to get IpSensorMan close to releasable to the beta program which is my initial learning exercise and it's a 10th of the code.

Ifor, if you need an additional test bed, I've got 2 capable phones. My Xperia Active is now exclusively a bike computer and I always have phone with me on the bike. I'll be happy to run dev builds on one of the devices.

I plan on a public beta once I have something but its taking way longer than I had hoped.

Something I would like to add on the wishlist. It is specifically for runners but maybe it could be interesting for ipbike (and for me :) ).

Typically while running the phone is strapped around an arm. Would it be possible to use the accelerometers to derive the running cadence?

This is now done in gps watches like Garmin forerunner 620 and fenix 2.

thanks
Stijn

I actually have some of the code needed for cadence namely all the accelerometer sampling stuff although it's all switched off. It was added in when I was trying to work out the incline off the accelerometer before I gave up in the mess you get with vibration when really mounted on the bike.

I will look to get it switched on on my phone and at least log some data to play with algorithms to get the cadence and filter it. I tend to carry the phone in my hand when running which I guess will be at lease similar to on an arm band just more movement.

Well there are 5s and 30s average power display items available as well as the fully user customisable Recent average power where you can configure the time yourself from Settings -> Main bike settings -> Trip control -> moving average time. So that should get you the three timeframes you are after.

But the PV visualization is only one. If I add another PV i can't change the average time.
This is possible only a real power .

to remedy errors altitude gps smartphone without barometer, it would not be possible to use these data DEM like: http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html

I THINK IS A GOOD SOLUTION FOR ANYONE ( LIKE ME ) THAT NOT HAVE A BAROMETER INTO YOUR SMARTPHONE AND THAT HAS NO INTENTION TO CHANGE SMARTPHONE

This data is used also by oruxmaps......and many other android apps

THANKS

Hi, I would like a new option in the "Screen Power Profile", one like the "Screen stay bright" but that lets me turn off the screen with the phone hardware button.
Right now, with the "Screen stay bright" option, if I turn off the screen it pops back on after a couple of seconds.
Thanks

If you press the power button again I think it will stay off the second time. I spent the best part of 2 days trying to work out what was causing this way back and could not work it out. It's something I will re-evaluate once the UI update has happened as that bit of code will probably get a re-work.

Sorry it has been so long since my first post here, the real world has been interfering with my real interests.

I found an API for weatherdata. It is free for limited database access. As far as I can tell it is a signup for the developer only. You can access one month historical as well as current (10 min) data.

http://openweathermap.org/

My idea is you could access the database over 4g every 10 minuets to get wind, humidity and temperature data based on GPS locationt.

The program I originally refed to is GPSThermo and is by oxdb.net and is called "Air tempurature by address" in the playstore.

Automatic upload to Strava after stopping an activity would be nice! Also an automatic start of the sensors when starting the app!

Automatic upload and auto start sensors both really only match a rather specific usage pattern and are not at all suitable for a lot of users myself included.

Automatic upload precludes you from being able to put in a nice textural descriptions for the ride which I believe quite a lot of people use and like. it's also not very good for people on a limited data plan where at least waiting till your inside and connected to wifi saves a good bit on data costs.

Auto starting the sensors is not so good if your just navigating the app looking at the history or setting up a route etc. Auto-start sensors will start chewing through the battery when your not interested in starting a ride at all yet.

I could add in settings to have these settable but there are already too many settings leading to criticism about that.

The software is quite good. Since I started to use it I stopped looking for other software for cycling.
One feature that could be added and in my opinion would be quite beneficial is to flag the "heart rate zone" you are while cycling. It could be by changing the color of the heart rate or to advise, via voice, what kind of work out you are doing. Similar to the reports the software provide you while you cycling. Aside of that nothing to add.

You can add a display item for the current HR Zone if you want. Colouring an item based on some user definable parameters is on the long term todo list but a while off.

If you set up a workout with the target intensity based off a HR Zone then you will get feedback, however you have configured it if you go outside of the zone. Check the workout help page

Hi Ifor,
would you be interested in adding the W'bal metric?
W'bal is a measure of how much depleted is your energy reserve. It only goes down while riding over the critical power and when it reaches 0 you have to slow down below CP until W'bal goes back up.
It's a good predictive model and no other headunit has it.

It's already implemented in golden cheetah for after the ride analysis, on a modern pc the calculations for plotting a graph of a 5 hour ride takes from a few seconds up to half a minute, so I think it could be done in real time on a smartphone.

If you are interested I can give you the specifics on how to do the calculations. Given the CP and the W' (every user should take them from goldencheeta), W'bal is a simple integral [from 0 to t] of an exponential.

Fabrizio
