gps issues
Things to check if your having gps issues.
Firstly there is a setting to globally disable the use of the gps. Settings –> Other phone settings –> More power options –> Enable GPS. It’s there for doing things like 24 hour races where you may be short on battery with the gps on but be ok logging the other data with it off. If that’s OK then the next thing that will stop the gps being used is if the bike is set up as Indoors - stationary, as soon as a bike like this is selected then the gps get’s switched off. The phone having the GPS disabled globally will also cause trouble but you should get an explicit warning about this.
If your regularly having trouble you need to check that you have a GPS fix at the start of the ride. The simplest way is to just check the map after going start sensors. Once you get a fix the IpBike Icon should appear and go to the right position. If in doubt just move the map a bit and wait for it to jump back to the right position. If you want you can add the gps accuracy to the display which will give you a number to look at. You should wait for it to settle down hopefully to something < 10m although this may struggle in a bad gps reception scenario like woods or an urban canyon.
It’s always best to wait for a good fix while stationary as some phones have real trouble getting a fix when moving especially if the phone is not ideally placed e.g. in a jersey pocket rather than being mounted on the bars of the bike.
If your phone is not getting a good fix in a timely manner than I have found that a power cycle will get it finding the sattelites more quickly.
Mounting is also critical for good gps logging. The phone mounted on the bike is best. Hidden away underneath other stuff in a bag is not at all good.
If the gps looks to glitch for no good reason then posibly adjusting the Android system level location to be 'gps only' this is some times labled 'phone only' or device only'. What you don't want is what is described as 'High accuracy' using mobile and wifi as well as gps.
